Dr Arnold Young

Hi everyone! Welcome to Understanding Your Financial World.

I will be your course tutor for the next eight weeks. I hope that you will enjoy learning about the financial world as much as I enjoy teaching it. Don't let the Dr in front of my name put you off. That's only a recent addition. Before that, I spent almost twenty years working in the financial services industry and I learnt most of what I know about the financial world on the job. Because of that, I try to keep things simple and practical.

One of the things that I enjoyed most in my own learning is making discoveries all by myself. I intend to be a guide, to point you in the right direction, but let you make your own discoveries about the financial world. This is largely necessary, anyway, because of the extramural nature of the course but I hope you find my approach helpful and enjoyable. I will, of course, be here to help you, or point you in new directions, if you need it.

Dr Pushpa Wood

Namaste. I am Dr Pushpa Wood. I am the Director of the Financial Education and Research Centre at Massey University.

I will be co-tutoring this course. I have a long history of adult and financial literacy advocacy. I was previously the Education Manager at the Commission for Financial Literacy and Retirement Income. I have worked across the school, tertiary, and industry sectors to improve adult literacy and financial literacy, and I am a member of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority’s project advisory group reviewing financial literacy unit standards. I am also the current Chairperson of the Adult Literacy Practitioners’ Association.I have extensive experience in developing teaching and learning resources, training and development and stakeholder relationship. My research interests include identifying trigger points that motivate people to change their financial behaviour and testing culturally appropriate evaluation tools.

Week 7: The Reserve Bank of New Zealand

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has two primary roles. In Week 3 we encountered the Reserve Bank's role in setting monetary policy. As well, the Reserve Bank has a responsibility for regulating and supervising financial institutions. At the end of Week 7 you will be able to demonstrate an awareness of that governance and supervisory role.
